Finally, reached home. Carrying myself hardly to the bedroom, my heavy eyelids couldn’t bear holding it anymore and dashed myself onto my sofa bed, slumbering both the soul and the body to its extremities. Before could completely go unconscious, noticed a warm soothing hand over my head surfing through my hairs which was unseen in the darkness but could clearly listen to her sweet kind voice across her timid small presence. She said, “Don’t work so hard, my dear. I am sure you will achieve what you deserve. My blessings are always with you Rabeya.” Then I could remember no more, the voice faded away.
From the past few weeks, I have been really working hard in my office to win the prize money of 12 months’ salary for the Best Employee of the Year. It wasn’t only an achievement for me but is now my most need. The amount was enough to effort Mrs. Shahjeda a surgery for a heart replacement. Her heart has one of its valves disordered and it is way too dangerous. My only family was she. I already got into debts for paying mother’s medical expenses which indeed made us sell our house, properties and others. With only a salary of Tk. 12,000 per month for an assistant manager, it wasn’t enough for our necessities now.
Moreover, we shifted to a one-room apartment in the duskiest environment have been ever to. Unfortunately, had no choice. Working late nights, for the best project and hard in the office was now all for my mother. Her love gave me the strength, the power to perform my best.
Next morning, as the soft sunlight sneaked into my room waking me up, I realised it was the day for the judgment to be heard. Who could be the ‘Best Employee of the Year’ shall be known today. Lifting my body slowly from the cozy surface, firstly looked for Mrs. Shahjeda. Well, she wasn’t even in the kitchen. She was nowhere in this low-spaced house.
Right then breaking a nervous pause, she entered through the main door with her same kind smile. Her soft voice pronounced, “Dear, I got some fresh vegetables this early morning at half price. I also got your favorite bottle gourd for dinner, Oh! I just forgot to inform you; Mr. Bundle called this morning, asking you to come to the office today at 10:00 a.m.”
Boss asked me to be at the office an hour late. Strangely My voice strongly shouted my eager and expectations to today’s occasion.
Not being able to wait anymore, rushed to my office to hear today’s great news. Additionally, I was imaging mom living at peace with me. Mr. Bundle obviously knew my needs so somehow I was quite confident about the result.
Finally, the time arrived, the whole office employees were now at the hall. Everyone was in order and silence awaited Mr. Bundle to reveal his decision. He in center now stood to make us hear and break our nervousness. Breaking the silence, he said, “This year our company has achieved a lot and the best was the tender we assigned yesterday with the company of Walmart. Obviously, the presentation mesmerized their thoughts to deal with us, trusting in our company. And this best has been created only because of Rabeya’s hard work. The whole responsibility was her and she made it excellent. Now, since we all are ready to know the desired name of that employee, you will be shocked to know the Best Employee of the Year is… Mehzabin Akter!”
As soon as heard the name, my legs went numb, sweat rolled down the head, hands shivered and cold breeze passed and couldn’t hold my tears anymore. I fell on my knees and started crying. My dreams … they all shattered. My heart burst in rejection. Life seemed to be lifeless in a moment. Suddenly heard my name. “Rabeya Khatun, please come on the stage. Join us on this moment of pride.”
My mind turned out in curiosity. Now why he called me? I nervously stepped forward wiping my tears in a hidden way. My legs felt heavy while walking. As I walked to him, he put his clumpy hand over my back, putting firmly with his forever smile. Smiled back. Soon he turned back to his mic. Did he just say, l am promoted to the post of the Chief Executive Manager and three months’ salary as a bonus? Yes, he did. Oh my tears burst out of happiness and gladness in lips, could not speak. Now my salary was five times higher. I could easily now get my mother her treatments and give her a cozy life
